Description
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) was a towering figure of French Romanticism – organist, pianist, composer, and tireless advocate for French music. While he’s best known for works like Samson et Dalila, the Organ Symphony, and The Carnival of the Animals, he also composed a number of patriotic and ceremonial pieces, especially later in life.
À la France is one such work – a rousing, nationalistic composition that reflects Saint-Saëns’ deep sense of civic pride and his alignment with the ideals of the French Republic. Saint-Saëns often composed music for state events, including presidential receptions and national funerals.
À la France exemplifies Saint-Saëns’ as a “fonctionnaire de la musique” – a composer who served the Republic through art, as noted in studies of his extensive travels and public commissions.
