This lovely American folk melody is believed to have originated in 19th century in the east-central United States region of Appalachia. Its lullaby-like qualities make this simple tune a fitting representation of the lowly circumstances of the Christ-child’s birth in a stable, wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in a manger.
