“Auld Lang Syne” An Organ Fantasy
An rather compact fantasia on the Auld Lang Syne tune sung at New Year’s. This piece incorporates hymn, variation, fugue, and a grand finish all in the span of just a few minutes.
Originally written for a New Year’s Eve church service, the organ fantasia sit firmly in my “Post-College” period, marked by heavy use of counterpoint, particularly fugato-type writing. Beginning softly as a quiet hymn, as if in the background of a church, this is probably better suited for a concert than a church service. This piece also features one of my more impressive uses of variation in which I weaved the melody, alla klangfarbenmelodie, between the four voices beneath other melodic lines. I will probably never do such an effect again in any other music.
