Description
Often termed the saddest day in the church’s calendar this addition to my Holy Week suite looks very firmly to The Cross. Nails being driven into the helpless Christ, are announced on the harp with echoes of physical and emotional pain heralded by Horn (could be a Cor Anglais) with the cello adding a touch of cynicism.Â
The Cross is lifted at the end of the repeated section and from thereon the work is semi-programmatic. The words of Jesus and the crowd are printed in brief to help the performers.Â
The music gives way to the beautiful hymn ‘O Sacred Head, sore wounded’ and then the theme is extended in harp and cello. The upper harp part introduces what maybe tears falling…but whose?Â
