Sir John Stainer (6 June 1840 – 31 March 1901) was a prominent English composer and organist. Although his music is less frequently performed today, it enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime. One of his most renowned works is “The Crucifixion,” still performed in Anglican churches during Passiontide. Stainer’s influence on Anglican church music and his academic contributions, especially in Medieval and Renaissance music studies, remain significant.
