Description

A powerful arrangement of the classic Navy Hymn “Eternal Father Strong to Save”. The author William Whiting was inspired in part by Psalm 107, which describes God’s deliverance from a great storm on the sea: In verses 28 and 29, we read: “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble [and] he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.”

Advanced singers required to cover the ranges from Bottom E in the Bass part to top A in the Tenor I part

Eternal Father
==============
John B. Dykes, 1861 / William Whiting, 1860
arr. John van Gulik

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep.
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea!

Almighty, Whose voice stills the ocean
Almighty, Whose voice stills the ocean

O Saviour whose almighty word
The winds and waves submissive heard
Who walked’st on the foaming deep
And calm amidst its rage did sleep
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and pow’r
Our brethren shield in danger’s hour
From rock and tempest, fire and foe
Protect them wheresoe’re they go
Thus ever let there rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea

Amen
