THE FLYING FORTRESS, for Concert Band

The Flying Fortress for Concert Band is dedicated to the soldiers stationed at Thorpe Abbotts Base in East Anglia during World War II. The B-17 Bomber—known as the Flying Fortress—its crews, and its support staff embodied true heroism. Composed by the granddaughter of a World War II B-17 navigator, Major Eugene A. Carpenter, the piece follows a personal journey from sunrise at Thorpe Abbotts Air Base through the urgent call to order, liftoff, the air attack of “Five O’Clock High,” the “Bombs Away” mission, and a final tribute to the fallen. The courage and  perseverance of the group’s many unsung heroes amid staggering losses remain legendary.
