Description
I called my piece The Watermill as I’ve always found the working of these inventions fascinating, although there are not many in working operation these days. One can’t help admiring the physical beauty of these watermills and you somehow get transported back in time whenever you see one. You can imagine the workers using the waterwheel’s power as it paddles the water to drive heavy machinery inside the building to grind grain into flour or saw wood into logs for construction.
The Watermill is a programmatic piece, that is, I wanted it to paint a picture of the scene creating a nostalgic atmosphere. It’s the open countryside, birds are singing and livestock are around the mill. It is in concert G minor moving to Eb major in the middle before returning to the home key. I’ve tried to encapsulate the gentle rolling of the wheel as it paddles the water using continuous quaver movement in the piano accompaniment. And above this are lyrical melodies to capture the moment which weave between the instruments.
