The Hop-Step-Skip-Jump method teaches music reading for piano using simple movements which apply to the piano keyboard, and to the position of adjacent notes on the music:
The idea is that the learner should be able to try reading any music using these intervalic movements, regardless of whether they know the specific note names.
When instructing using this method, it is important to keep emphasising that the movement relates to the interval between two notes. Use the previous note and the distance to the next one to work out whether it is a hop, step, skip or jump. Remember to point out that intervals can be read across systems, from one line to the next, but the student needs to do a bit more detective work to figure out those intervals.
A jump is obviously a less specific term, and this method will prove useful for teaching the first three movements (hop, step, skip), which will be most effective for reading and learning melodies.
