Description
Hidden Beauty on a Rocky Trail for String Quartet was inspired by numerous backpacking trips made by the composer in Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The quarter-note motif in the first two measures represents walking moderately fast in hiking boots on a rocky trail, and is played intermittently by all members of the string quartet. Sometimes the trail is smooth and flat; other times the trail is steep and rugged. Everyone must watch their step, being careful around rocks, boulders, and tree roots. There are small streams to cross. After hiking for a while, something of great beauty catches someone’s eye (solo by first violin), causing all to linger for quite some time (violin duet, then entire quartet) to savor this special moment. The hike resumes and finally concludes with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
